n. 1. (psychology) the
hypothesis that pent-up emotions or urges can be dissipated by acting them out or fantasizing about them.
For example, the psychotherapist urges a patient to work out his anger by punching a pillow. This approach is
about as effective as scratching a poison oak rash.
