n. 1. that quality of self-assertion in a person or field
that is needed in inverse proportion to actual knowledge, competence, or
demonstrated right to lead. See Law of Authority. 2. a self-nominated
expert in a field. 3. an organization consisting of self-nominated experts in a field. See professional society,
orthodox medicine, orthodox science,
psychology. 4. a charlatan; one who substitutes mouth for mastery. 5. a
nay-sayer; one who cannot do something and works tirelessly to convince you that it cannot be done.
