treadmill
n. 1. originally a continuous belt that a
person or animal walked upon to drive a machine for grinding grain. It came to be synonymous with
the worst type of labor – boring, repetitive, exhausting, low-paying – the sort
of work that one could never escape from except by dying. It now describes a machine
that people use voluntarily as a form of recreation.
